Tinkering Story #22 – Stars and Lightning in Damouchari, Greece

Sometimes, an unscheduled shooting leads to an excellent photo. I’m on vacation in the beautiful Damouchari, Greece, near Volos. I was relaxing in my room (by the way, Cleopatra’s Miramare is the best hotel/suite I’ve stayed so far in Greece), and I thought to take a short walk on the beach to shoot a startrail photo. My expectations for a publication-worthy image were low, as the sky was partly cloudy and I hadn’t researched the area to find a suitable foreground for nightscape photography. Moments after I started shooting, a far-away lightning storm interrupted the quietness of the night. The heavens tore open, spilling jagged shards of light across the dark canvas of the sky.

As the end of the storm was approaching, I saw the Moon rising on the cloudy horizon. I rushed to my room and returned with a second camera to capture our celestial neighbour, accompanied by a couple of lightning strikes.

Lunar Crepuscular Rays and Lightning.

Moonrise and lightning.
