Tinkering Story #01 – GreekSky

Hi!
I’m Chris from Athens, Greece and currently living in Reading, UK. I’m into astrophotography since 2007.
Photography gave me the opportunity to travel, make friendships, and see a few of my photos published. For the last 15 years, it’s been a lot of shooting, studying photography and post-process techniques, a lot of try and error, many, many, many failures and a few brilliant successes!

I’m not a professional photographer but a keen amateur, devoted to capturing this ‘perfect shot’ even if this means climbing mountains or staying all night in a tent in below-zero temperatures. It’s not only about publications and awards. It is mainly because there is beauty out there that MUST be captured.

Every moment is unique but some moments are a bit more unique(!) than others. 🙂 These are a few highlights of my efforts so far, published in greeksky.gr and elsewhere:

Moon on Fire. My first ever publication in the old, good Lunar Photo Of the Day. A site maintained for many years by a brilliant Moon specialist, Dr Chuck Wood.

Fire in the Sky. A stack of 70 lightning images, published in National Geographic April 2012 issue.

Lightning Eclipse from the Planet of the Goats. This was an out-of-this-world experience! Lightning and lunar eclipse at the same time and I was fortunate enough to be in the right place at the right time!

Night and Day above Almost Planet Sounio. 24 hours and 360° landscape in one image!

Crescent Moon and Poseidon Temple. Earth Picture Of the Day best of 2009.

Ancient Moon. Perhaps my favourite. Not an awarded photo but this was one of my first efforts, in my favourite place on Earth -the Temple of Poseidon-, with a £70 telescope -a gift from my wife-, tied with a rope in a small flimsy tripod as my telescope tripod was lost the previous day. My good friend Anthony was also there, shooting a remarkable photo!

Greek Sky has been the centre of my attention for many years but it lacks interaction. It is just an image catalogue. In most cases, it doesn’t provide the story behind the photos, what it felt like being there, or details about capturing and post-processing. I enjoy landscape astrophotography and lately, I’m trying to improve in deep sky imaging.

This has been a wonderful journey. My goal is to share and continue learning.

Clear Skies to everyone and may the Weather be with you! 🙂
